‘Her excellent book not only provides ample material for pre- repertoire vocal warm ups (diction, intonation, sight singing and agility are all covered with fabulously simple yet memorable patterned sequential exercises) but also gives help with physical warm-ups, including stretches and posture guidelines in keeping with the principles taught through Alexander technique. Strongly recommended. |

‘Nancy Litten has spotted, and plugged, a crucial gap in piano teaching. Jobbing pianists should buy this book. It will pay for itself countless times over.’
Michael Round in Music Teacher Magazine
‘This slim volume could be the most important book you ever buy. While not an in-depth manual on singing, it teaches you more than most accompanists could possibly guess about the specialised needs of singes, both choral and solo, professional and – in their potentially lucrative thousands – amateur.’ ‘I thought I'd send you an email to say how much I'm enjoying using your 'Choral and Vocal Warm-Ups' book; I used it at the rehearsals I had last week and it was very well received. I like the layout and the content very much indeed.’ 'Everything is organized in a logical order with clear explanations. Anyone who plays for or directs choral rehearsals at whatever level would benefit from reading this book and applying what they find relevant - they will enjoy their rehearsals more, as will their choirs!' |
Choral and Vocal Sight Singing with Keyboard Harmony
After the success of 2015's Choral and Vocal Warm Ups for Pianists, Nancy Litten's latest book from Alfred UK, Choral and Vocal Sight Singing with Keyboard Harmony, serves a dual purpose. It gives choral and solo singers gently graded sight singing practice whilst at the same time encouraging the pianist to accompany them from chord symbols. Many examples of the possible realisations of the chords are given and the number of different keys and chords increases gradually.
One chord per bar is used at first with more rapid changes in the later chapters. Each stage includes exercises for the singers (to be practised, not just sight read) and songs to be accompanied. The Pianist Edition includes chord examples and practice routines, and at the back, a chord compendium. |
'A very well-graded book providing plenty of new, interesting and amusing material to make learning this essential skill a lot of fun! The singer edition has the chord-names over the stave, and points out harmonic items of interest, such as passing notes, both unaccented and accented, as the singer is led skilfully through the complexities of notation. |

'Got my copy of Rounds for Choirs. It's just what I was looking for! A nice variety of words and tunes - suitable for adults and children. So, many thanks for your work. I hope it won't be too long before I'm actually able to use it with my choir!' The repertoire is a mixture of tried and tested favourite rounds that we all know and love, originals written by Nancy and rounds that we may be aware of but can't quite get our hands on. The publication is peppered with lovely illustrations by Nancy making it an attractive and distinctive publication. Priced at £9.95 this is a really useful book if you want to have all your rounds in one place. |
Litten's sense for what choir conductors find helpful is exceptional; the rounds are laid out with utmost clarity for understanding how different entries work, also providing options for smaller or larger part-options, and unison versions. Perhaps the most invaluable aspect of this collection is the inclusion of excellent piano parts for every song; even well-worn classics like 'Frère Jacques' and 'Ah! Poor Bird' are given new accompaniments, with interesting harmonic and rhythmic choices that would ensure that every song in the collections can be used as a performance option in its own right. |
